Featured Publication: New Perspectives on Land Grabbing in Argentina
In March 2025, the book The New Dynamics of Land Grabbing in Argentina: Characterization, Alternatives, and Challenges was published. This collective work delves into the territorial transformations linked to the phenomenon of land grabbing in the country.
The book includes two chapters authored by members of the Regional Focal Point of Land Matrix in Argentina:
- Chapter 1, Section 1: Competencies and Potential Land-Use Conflicts Related to Large-Scale Land Transactions in the Chaco Salteño
- Chapter 1, Section 3: Land Grabbing and Differential Appropriation of Water Resources in the Chaco Salteño Region
These contributions foster a critical analysis of the dynamics of territorial and natural resource appropriation, providing valuable tools for influencing public policy.

Strengthening Our Networks in Latin America and the Caribbean
During this period, we have strengthened and expanded our strategic partnerships in the region through the signing of agreements with prominent organizations. We have established partnerships with Javeriana University in Colombia, DATALUTA in Brazil, and the University Observatory of Territorial Planning (OUOT) in Honduras, among other institutions committed to the defense of territory.
These partnerships not only expand our collaboration networks but also promote the exchange of experiences, knowledge, and resources. Through these relationships, the initiative amplifies its impact, gains direct insights into local and regional dynamics, and strengthens its ability to influence public policy with strategies adapted to each country’s unique challenges.
By reinforcing collaborative networks, we renew our commitment to driving transformative action and building more equitable and sustainable territories across Latin America and the Caribbean.
Data Campaign 2024: Progress and New Approaches
In 2024, our deal campaign focused on three emerging thematic areas that are gaining importance within our initiative:
- Deals involving the expansion of soybean cultivation in Brazil and Argentina
- «Green» deals, covering wind and solar energy projects
- Deals linked to carbon offset projects
Most new and updated deals came from Argentina (39%) and Brazil (37%). Mexico contributed 7% of the deals, followed by Nicaragua (4%), Colombia (3%), and Peru and Uruguay with 2% each (Figure 1). Other participating countries—Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, the Dominican Republic, Panama, and Suriname—each contributed less than 2%, collectively making up 6% of the total.

The primary land-use intention recorded was soybean production, which accounted for 35% of all deals (Figure 2). Renewable energy projects — mainly solar and wind — made up 24%, while carbon offset initiatives, a growing focus over the past year, represented 16% of the total. Lithium mining was also notable, comprising 11% of deals. Other deals included diverse activities such as forestry, livestock, non-soy agriculture, and tourism.

For the current campaign, efforts will prioritize three key areas: agriculture, critical minerals for the energy transition, and green projects. Additionally, we will continue systematically updating the database, incorporating new carbon offset deals from across the region and revising agricultural ones.
Contribute to the database on land transactions!
This is an invitation to organizations working on land issues, academic institutions, researchers, grassroots organizations, government offices, and committed individuals, who are interested in sharing any kind of information on large land acquisitions in Latin America.
